Fall is Coming (Eventually): How to Adjust Your Phoenix Pool Care for September

2 min read

While September in the Valley still feels like peak summer, subtle shifts are already happening. The days are growing shorter, the sun sits lower on the horizon, and the extreme summer heat is slowly beginning to taper off.

Even though your water is still warm enough for afternoon swims, your pool’s operational needs are changing. Making a few smart adjustments right now will protect your water quality and cut down on your APS or SRP energy bill before fall officially arrives.

1. Scale Back Your Pump Runtimes

During June and July, running your pump 8 to 12 hours a day was vital to circulate chemicals and prevent algae blooms. As UV exposure drops in mid-to-late September, you can safely scale your pump runtime back by 1 to 2 hours.

  • Pro Tip: If you run a variable-speed pump, shift longer filtration cycles to off-peak energy hours to lower your monthly utility costs.

2. Stay Vigilant for Late-Season Monsoons

Arizona's monsoon season doesn't officially wrap up until late September. Dust storms hitting warm, late-summer water create ideal conditions for sudden algae blooms.

  • Empty skimmer and pump baskets immediately after high winds.

  • Brush pool walls to dislodge microscopic dust before it settles.

  • Test chlorine levels right after a storm to ensure your sanitizer wasn't depleted.

3. Adjust for Decreased UV Burn-Off

Fewer hours of direct sunlight mean cyanuric acid (stabilizer) won't have to work quite as hard to protect your chlorine from burning off. However, because water temperatures remain high, organic load from swimmers and heat remains an issue. Keep free chlorine levels steadily balanced between 2.0 and 4.0 ppm.

4. Perform a Post-Summer Filter Clean

Your filters worked overtime through three months of haboobs, Palo Verde debris, and heavy summer pool use. Cleaning cartridge filters or backwashing your media now restores optimal flow pressure and equipment efficiency.
